How to find places to ride and help with access issues
Riding trails
We will be creating an interactive map of New Zealand tracks, trails and pathways publicly accessible for horses, but in the meantime, here are some existing sites which have information on places to ride.
NZ Bridleways -Find Your Ride
This is New Zealand’s largest listing of places to ride your horse and was the brainchild of our much missed Viv Dostine and the NZ Horse Network
It features public horse riding spaces – horse trails, shared trails, bridleways and parks, with information from DOC, Local and Regional Councils and local riders into a single website.
It also allows you to provide details to add rides. We strongly encourage you to do this to help build a picture of what is available across the country.

A wealth of information for riders
Herenga ā Nuku Aotearoa (formerly The Walking Access Commission) is the body that handles all public access inquiries, disputes and negotiations. Although they have no powers of enforcement they are a good resource to help understand the legalities of access, and help facilitate meetings.
They also have a fabulous mapping resource - WAMS - Walking Access Maps - which shows all unformed roads, and most tracks and trails.
